Nova Credit Guide

How credits work, what they cost, and how to manage your team's monthly budget across Nova and Studio

Every UpKeep account includes a monthly credit budget per user. Credits are metered and tracked per action across Nova and Studio. The amount included depends on your plan — and if your team needs more, you can purchase additional credit packs that never expire.


How credits work

A credit is the cost of Nova or Studio doing the work behind your request. Usage is now metered and tracked per credit — so you can see exactly what's being consumed and by whom.

Key things to know:

  • Each user gets a monthly credit budget based on your plan

  • Credits are shared across Nova and Studio

  • Monthly credits reset each billing cycle

  • Simple tasks cost fewer credits; complex analysis costs more

  • Additional credit packs can be purchased for users who hit their monthly budget — these never expire

Tracking usage and balance

Admins can monitor credit consumption and remaining balance for the whole team in Settings → Nova & Studio. This view shows:

  • Per-user credit usage

  • Current balance vs. monthly budget

  • Any purchased credit pack balances (these roll over and never expire)

If a user hits their monthly budget, you can purchase additional credit packs directly from the same settings page — no need to contact support.


Nova Standard vs. Nova Max

Nova has two modes: Standard and Max. Both draw from the same credit pool. The difference is what you use them for.

Nova Standard

Fast actions, high-volume commands

Standard is Nova's default mode, built for speed. Use it when you know what you want and just need Nova to do it quickly.

Examples:

  • "Assign all WOs in Building 2 to Charles"

  • "What's the status of WO #4892?"

  • "Close all completed PMs from last week"

  • "Set priority to urgent on all WOs submitted today"

Standard uses fewer credits per task. For most teams, included monthly credits cover a full month of Standard usage with room to spare.

Nova Max

Analysis, reasoning, multi-step tasks

Max is built for complex tasks where the answer requires pulling from multiple sources, identifying patterns, or building something new. It uses more credits per task because it's doing more work.

Examples:

  • "Show me which techs are consistently completing PMs late and why"

  • "Build a preventive maintenance schedule for all HVAC units based on failure history"

  • "Which assets have had the most unplanned downtime this quarter?"

Save Max for when you need deep analysis, not just quick action.


How many credits will I use?

Credit consumption varies by task complexity and the amount of data in your account. As a general guide:

  • Light users: ~50 credits/month — well within every plan's included allotment

  • Regular Standard users: 200–400 credits/month — comfortably within most plans

  • Heavy Max users: May exceed the included allotment — credit packs are available for these teams

The credit model is designed so that most customers never hit a limit. Power users who extract significant value from Max can choose to add more — everyone else never sees a bill.


Need more credits?

If a user hits their monthly credit budget, here's what to do:

  1. Go to Settings → Nova & Studio

  2. Review usage and balance for your team

  3. Purchase additional credit packs directly from the page — no ticket required

Purchased credits never expire and roll over month to month, so there's no risk of losing what you buy.


FAQ

Do unused monthly credits roll over?
No — included monthly credits reset each billing cycle. Only purchased credit packs carry over.

Are Nova and Studio credits shared or separate?
Shared. Every credit used in Nova or Studio draws from the same monthly pool.

Can I see which users are consuming the most credits?
Yes — admins can view per-user credit usage in Settings → Nova & Studio.

What happens when a user runs out of credits?
They won't be able to use Nova or Studio features until the monthly budget resets or an admin purchases additional credit packs for them.

Does the credit model apply to all plans?
Yes — all plans include a monthly credit allotment per user. The amount varies by plan (see the table above).
